using replay file in up 'n' down

greenspun.com : LUSENET : MAME Action Replay : One Thread

Okay, I downloaded the replay file for up 'n' down for mame beta 7 and I tried to run the file just like the instructions said to do so, but no luck at all. The game just sits there until I insert a coin. What am I doing wrong? Help me if you can.

You need to use Mame v0.33 Beta7 and..... [more]

Edward,

I presume its my 91530 recording you were trying to playback.

1) You need to make sure its Mame v0.33 Beta7 you use to replay. 2) You need to make sure you use 0 frameskip (you can unthrottle if you wish). 3) You need to rename the inp file to be < 8 characters prior to the . delimeter. ie: rename from bj_upndown_91530_m33b7.inp to upndown.inp (I now only rename the zipfile like most of the others are now doing. It used to playback with long file names but this support got dropped around v0.31.) 4) Make sure this file is in the \mame\inp directory.

You should now be able to playback the file ok. (Well I just did using Mame v0.33 Beta 7 anyway.)

Cheers, BeeJay.

Note on long filenames and DosMAME

I wasn't aware that DosMAME would ever playback .inp files with long filenames, even in v0.30. There is a fairly simple workaround, though, which will allow you to use long filenames with all versions of DosMAME... Windows 95/98 uses a standard method for translating long filenames into 8.3 style filenames that DOS can recognize. The files are truncated as follows:
-------------------------------------------
Long Filename Short Name
========================== ============
bj_upndown_91530_m33b7.inp bj_upn~1.inp
ggg_lnc_34180_m34b6.inp ggg_ln~1.inp

This simply shortens the name of the file to the first 6 characters, and a ~1 in place of the remaining name. In the event that there are 2 files with the same 6 characters up front, the ~1 becomes a ~2 (and so on). If you have more than 9 similarly named files, the filename is shortened to 5 characters + ~10 (I assume that this continues until you max out the number of files in the directory). I hope the html tags above worked, otherwise it'll look kinda weird. =Angry=

Same as above, but with more HTML (attempting to make it look better)
