In addition to agreeing with Joe's comments, another strength of this shot is its simplicity. A very classy image!

Garry --

You have some of the most uniformly excellent work on this site.

I'm curious as to how you metered this -- off the snow and then opened up a couple of stops, or off the leaf? My luck with snow scenes has been poor in the past, and I'm hoping to improve this winter.

Thanks for the cudos, Pat. I have to think, though, that you may have missed some of my posts which weren't up to par. Glad you liked what you saw.

The Nikon digital has three metering modes including matrix, center weighted and spot metering. The exposure can then be increased or decreased in 1 Ev steps. In this case I used center weighted metering. That would have accentuated the leaf but may also have been influenced to a degree by the snow around the leaf. The resulting image was slightly underexposed and was brightened by 10-15% in my image editor program.

In some other experiments I increased the exposure of a subject involving snow by 1 Ev. That generally seemed to lead to overexposure of the highlights.

Hope this helps. Thanks again.
