WTB: Vacuum pots AKA coffee syphons AKA silex pots in metal or glass. These pots have a globe on top with a tube sticking down into a bottom globe. Here's an example:

Remember not to buy for us unless we have reached an explicit agreement on price etc. Otherwise let us know!

Hi Ted,

I think I have one in new condition stored away. Let me see if I can dig it out for you. It is a glass globe job with a metal support. More to follow...

Tom,

I think Bodum still makes these. Actually, this is the product that made Bodum mainstream in the late 50's and early 60's. They care called Santos. Take a look at their website at http://www.bodum.com/products/coffee/coffee.htm

There are other manufacturers mainly for the Japanese and Taiwanese market. Some places still server their "specialty" coffee in single size version of these...usually pretty bad stuff though!

The older stuff is getting harder to get. Prices range from $200- over $500!

Hi Ted,

My car is in the shop and I can't check for the vaccum maker this weekend. I know exactly where it is, but it is in storage at my wife's store. Hope you don't mind waiting a week...sorry!

Hi Ted,

I finally dug out the vacuum filter pot. It is a original 10 cup Hellem from France in glass with chrome stand and white handle. Included is a small alcohol burner with new wick and cap. It is gorgeous, you'll love it.

I wish I had a digital camera (on my Christmas wishlist) This type of coffee maker has been in production since the early 1900's. The pot style is much like the English Conos except there is no cover on the top recepticle and it is more spherical (see http://www.cellaret.com/coffee.html ). Condition is brand new--it was dusty so I had to wash it off, but it was never used.

This type of pot has retro collector value, but I remember purchasing it in this condition as a backup pot (had another one) for $200. Makes a great conversation piece and as an added bonus, it makes great coffee! If you want it, you can have it for $150 + shipping-- or make me a trade offer.

Oh, btw, if you are just looking for a plain jane user...take a look at the plastic Bodum Santos for about $50.

Cheers, Dan

Hi Ted,

Is there a brand name on these. I have seen an American version of the Kona (Cona?) called, I beleive, the Cora??? I have seen complete sets in thrift stores, but not for a while now. Anyone know anythign about the Cora?

It's June 2002, now. And I read those old conversations about traditional coffee makers like Hellem, Cona, Bodum etc. Let me add that my grandmother had such a coffee brewing machine in the 20s. It was made by Jenaer Glas in Jena, Germany at that time. After WWII, Schott Glas in Mainz, Germany re-started production of these blown glass items made of borosilicate (heat resistant) glass. Hellem of Lyon, France was one of my customers who changed from Pyrex to our Schott glass somewhere in the 80s. Another customer was Cona of England whose glass supply just recently was returned to Jenaer Glas, a sister comany of Schott Glas. Bodum also bought this glass from Schott and is still bying the bottom part.

A mr. Richard Nayl (richard.nayl@freesbee.fr) is working on a book about coffee vaccuum brewers.

I have been collecting Vaccuum Brewers for several years. I have 70- 80 in my collection. Sylex, Cory, Kent, Mc Kee, Sunbeam, Westinghouse, General Electric, Abco ... I also have stoves, and filters. I have restautant sets as well as home units. I am still looking for a farberware coffee robot and others of the ilk. Iam searching for the matching creamers, sugars, and serving trays. Iwas eager to read more about your work. When will this get published? I don't have any Nesbit's tho' I wouldnt turn one away. I am a product of the 20th century and lean toward those models. Best of luck in your endeavors! Bob

But if you want to accept a (better) alternative, I can help...

Good Luck, Patrick www.coffee4you.com

I have been collecting Silex (exclusively) vacuum coffeemakers for 30 years. I have about 22 complete units and tons of replacement parts, both glass and hardware. There are still some models I have been unable to find, and am finding storage for the stuff I have is becoming a problem. FYI, I'm looking for the following (SILEX) bowl numbers: UK-4; LK-4; UC-9; UP-6; UP-12; LP-12; LFA-12. Feel free to list any bowls or hardware you need.
