Just Tell The Truth

Some one asked in a private e-mail about my statement, to paraphrase (cant find the thread it was on and this forum REALLY needs a search engine!):

So basically theres an automatic loss of control programed into the controllers [computer] systems. How elegant.

It is merely an observation that global manipulators, some with heart, some not, tend to sow the seeds of their own collapse. From within. Thats the elegance of their visionary (strategic) actions. Im not saying that is necessarily the people posting here.

It started with the captains of industry and continued with career politicians and was all manipulated silently by the ones who think their hot dollars will help them dominate the world. Problem is, theyve brought the WHOLE planet and all the people on it, with them into their controlled mess which is then publicly accented by their personal power plays, over, and within the mass media, including the entertainment industry. That one really annoys me!

No matter what you/they think, a very large percentage of this population is very intelligent. (We are not the Marching Morons illustrated so well in a science fiction short story). We can figure things out, most the smart ones have computers, and you ARE right ... the internet is a wild card.

Just Tell The Truth. (And muzzle the lawyers). Thats all.

Please re-read your Constitution and Bill Of Rights -- the ones written over 200 years ago -- then chuck everything written as follow-on commentary since then. Its time to put back on your raccoon hats (poor little guys) men and women, et. al., and all become the Davy Crocketts we once were (some still wont carry guns, maybe mailbags). And for that part of the population sill holding their Bibles, Koran, Torah, etc. read the good stuff and the words the key teachers spoke, act on that and let the follow-on commentary go, for now. Y2K needs everyone to be their personal best.

Also, please dont throw out the baby with the bathwater, just because a creators pants are down. This web-site will see a lot of newcomers who will need help, even though Eds other one will be launched. (Ed Yourdon put this ball in motion, and its time to play the end game, perhaps with an expanded vision.) Please do continue to operate this forum openly, just do it honestly and from your hearts, and dazzle em with your tap dancing. (Lurkers too).

Thanks, Diane (at Silicon Valley low, not high)

(P.S. Tell Hollywood to make different movies. That Siege thing is just too-o-o-o blatant).

Are there any other comments on WHY our country et. al. should Tell The TRUTH?

Answers

They should always tell the truth. Period. We are adults not children, and even children have the right to truth. The only thing that should be marked 'secret' is battle plans before they are executed.

-- Paul Davis (davisp1953@yahoo.com), November 09, 1998.

Paul - absolute agreement.

But, Diane, "Just Tell The Truth. (And muzzle the lawyers). Thats all."??!!! That's all??? I submit that you're calling for TEOTWAWKI!

I second your call.

-- Hardliner (searcher@internet.com), November 09, 1998.

Balanced Truth, Hardliner. For every problem identified, show the solutions. Show people what they can do to create community, rather than blindly hit a wall.

Do that now, and when the real problems start happening in January, then people/media will already be calmly preparing rather than just stunned. It also gets the media prepared to not go crazy. Just honest, and focused on all of us doing the best we can.

Diane

If the truth were told then perhaps people would have the time to allow the idea of disruptions to sink in. The masses could prepare, the government could prepare (openly, I think they are already but in silence). If the truth were told we might be able to get through this but the truth is subjective.

I think money is talking right now and the truth rarely has a place in matters where making or losing money is involved. There is simply too much money to be lost in business deals, construction of new facilities, office buildings and other developments, the stock markets, banking and financial interests if the pessimism associated with y2k became mainstream. Money is being made and as long as moeny is talking and as long as there are no disruptions of any great magnitude there IS NO y2k problem. Let's face it, right now, at this moment there is no y2k problem just a lot of speculation and facts that simply haven't come to fruition. The "truth" is that y2k disruptions aren't a problem YET. That is the the "truth" the chose to put their faith in.

I think the problems will come to fruition and they'll hit us hard because the "truth" as we understand it was not told in time for people to prepare.

Am I way off? ======================================================

A solution is not always about fixing something that cant be fixed in time. If it cant be fixed then start to find the creative solutions now (and dont forget to lift the box tops off the box either). I resubmit the statement ... To either paraphrase or quote, I believe it was Albert Einstein who said You do not solve a problem from the same consciousness that created it.

And Michael, once the ones with most the money really get that they ARE about to loose it all, perhaps theyll try a different vision.

Sorry, but, TRUTH and POWER are two completely different things. People with real power will do ANYTHING to keep it. POWER trumps TRUTH every time. I believe that TRUTH is the ultimate POWER, but then again, I may be deluding myself. I have no real POWER (in the world).

Besides - Is there an objective truth? and if there is, how do YOU KNOW that the guy who says that there will be minor inconveniences for a week after 1/1/00 isn't telling that objective truth?

To address your question - "Are there any other comments on WHY our country et. al. should Tell The TRUTH? "

1. Maybe the "Pollyannas" actually believe what they are saying is the truth.

2. Maybe the "people with REAL power" know something that you and I don't know.

3. Maybe the "people with REAL power" have a reason to cause TEOTWAWKI to further some agenda that we can only guess at.

4. Maybe the "people with REAL power" are mainly incompetent, and ARE "sowing the seeds of their own destruction." If that's the case, "Cool," I say. Hopefully we'll get to a better place without the rascals.

5. I leave this one up to you...

-- pshannon (pshannon@inch.com), November 09, 1998.

Diane,

I don't think I made myself clear. Telling the truth, balanced or otherwise, about Y2K will End The World As I Know it, and I suspect as most of the rest of the society knows it as well.

Hallyx's Orwell quote focused precisely on my point.

Hallyx,

I think we're about at the, "Four legs Good, Two legs Better", point in the story.

Truth

"Ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free." John 8:32

In re: "That Siege thing is just too-o-o-o blatant" Too true. Many of Hollywood's recent offerings (Armageddon, Deep Impact) chill me as they appear to be "setting the scene" for a nasty dose of reality. It would be one thing if people watched and as a result took some action, but I think the emotional response is that "everything" turns out well in the end, so why worry?

A word about conspiracies: Someone suggests "Conspiracy" and the overwhelming kneejerk response is "You're paranoid!" It is such a tag-team set that I rejected it long ago. Such a suggestion *should* be considered seriously and investigated like any other proposal. Conspirators do not necessarily sit around a table in some smoke-filled back room plotting something. Men with a common world-view need not speak with each other in order to work as a group toward a goal designed to benefit themselves, especially if they are in positions of power already. These are *implicit* conspiracies.

It is quite possible that the unusual, low key response to Y2K from our lusterless leadership here in the US, in contrast to say Canada or UK, is a hint that there is more interest in leveraging widespread problems and panic for political gain than in heading off the crisis in advance.

-- Elbow Grease (Elbow_Grease@AutoShop.com), November 09, 1998.

Diane,

I always appreciate your insight. You and I share more than just our optimism.

I think that many of those with "power" already get it. They're casually and quietly working on selling stocks, etc. They're already deep into their own personal contingencies.

Just this week I had to really question exactly why ol' Newt would bug out of the Speakership and the Congress. After all, there really wasn't some overwhelming move to put pressure on him and he'd seen worse spots with his own ethics violations. I certainly expect him to know much more about unseen, future events than I do.

Do I expect to hear the "truth" from any of them? At one time, yes. But that was a few months ago and since then I have seen the opposite take place. In just a few months time I have seen, without any logical explanation, a move toward downplaying the effects of y2k. I have to wonder "why?".

Money.

They don't want a run on banks, a flight to liquidity, a collapse of mutual funds, and on and on and on. It's all about money and the economy. They need to preserve the illusion and the truth is not part of the plan.

I am an optimist and I fully expect to begin to see them start eating their young very soon as their panic deepens and that is when the truth will become clear to the rest of us. However, it will take their panic, the collapse and the aftermath for the rest of us to see the truth come to light. Until then, there are just too many benefits for them to keep the truth quiet, the waters calm and the storm off the shore. ================================================

Just happened to watch the Oprah show today, guest starring Brad Pitt. Now theres a real human, being. At the end of the program Oprah made an appeal to help the people, the survivors of Hurricane Mitch. She illustrated the problem, then offered a solution. She told viewers what they could individually do to help these people -- not numbers, not statistics -- others, the still living, just like us and our families. A solution was to send donations to the American Red Cross International Relief fund.

This responsible media presentation/appeal is exactly the kind that can be developed for Y2K. Pull together a show illuminating the Y2K concerns, what we do know, what we dont know, and what we need to know about the possible local, state-wide, national and international repercussions of Y2K. Show what is being done, offer additional solutions to that which may not be fixed in time, and encourage communities at all levels to search for creative solutions to our common problems. Then show people what they can do at an individual level to calmly prepare, and where to go for additional information.

Remembering Your Spirit is exactly what we all need to do to prepare for Y2K.

Diane

(P.S. Michael, hopefully they will remember that lightening can strike at any moment. Change is the only certainty. Ive found its usually unexpected).

-- Diane J. Squire (sacredspaces@yahoo.com), November 09, 1998.

Michael, You are right on. "The LOVE of money is the root of all evil." If you search deeply into almost any corrupt situation whether it be political, business, entertainment, medicine, sports, etc., the bottom line is the LOVE of money. Diane, I'd like to challenge you to write Oprah about Y2K and, in turn, challenge her to do just as you suggested could be done after seeing her appeal for help re Mitch. Individual preparedness is vital; community preparedness is just as vital! Go for it!

-- Holly Allen (Holly3325@juno.com), November 09, 1998.

Great-granny Holly, that is EXACTLY what I was thinking. Diane, you go after Oprah. She reaches a HUGE audience.

About the movie "The Siege", I just found out yesterday that the original title was "Martial Law." Wonder why they changed it????

-- Gayla Dunbar (privacy@please.com), November 09, 1998.

Holly, I think I just did, and I will.

Remember, "What is today's truth, is something different tomorrow."

Truth IS a "work in progress," especially for those organizations not used to telling it. Y2K is far bigger than "they" are and eventually they'll get it.

"Men occasionally stumble over truth, but most of them pick themselves up and hurry off as if nothing had happened." Winston Churchill)

Otto Neugebauer told the writer the following legend about Einstein. It seems that when Einstein was a young boy he was a late talker and naturally his parents were worried. Finally, one day at supper, he broke into speech with the words, Die Suppe ist zu heiss. [The soup is too hot.] His parents were greatly relieved, but asked him why he hadn't spoken up before. The answer came back, Bisher war Alles in Ordnung. [Till now everything was in order.]

I see a parallel here.

This one is not really germane, but it's beautiful just the same:

"The primary purpose of the DATA statement is to give names to constants; instead of referring to pi as 3.141592653589793 at every appearance, the variable PI can be given that value with a DATA statement and used instead of the longer form of the constant. This also simplifies modifying the program, should the value of pi change." Fortran Manual for Xerox Computers

honestly don't think that they'll do y2k alert episode of the Orca Winfrey show, but if y'all wanna try make that happen, then knock yerselves out. As for the truth, it's rarely our business. Powers- that-be keep it from us routinely, they aren't gonna change tune just because y2k potentially impacts our personal well-being. I detect lotsa spin and perception management being deployed allready. I don't necessarily think that "they" have extensive plans for what to do re. y2k, they are after all (semi-)humans and as such have endless capacity for self-delusion and for ignoring that which they wish weren't true. For fnord's sake, we've all managed to pretty much ignore that our capitalist/consumerist/militaristic/technologic/me-first way of life is destined to make our planet unliveable in only decades. Our ostrich-impersonation abilities clearly know no limits.
