Here's an idea I just got via email that's a stroke of genius! Please, participate!

Everybody who is concerned about y2k should send a donation for Nicaragua and Honduras and write on it (prominently!) or on an accompanying scrap of paper "From the Y2K Community." Within days, we could raise hundreds of thousands of dollars and demonstrate that our networked community is not a bunch of nuts, but a connected, decentralized arm of the world mind that understands we're all in the soup together.

Let every one of us who has spoken to another of Y2K send something today for these people, our neighbors who lay humbling waiting in those devastated areas for a hand to hold, any hand, from anywhere on this planet that might care to help.

If Y2K is about community and survival, and sharing and cooperation, let's test our new skills now. Let's blow the minds of all the skeptics who see us as quivering, helpless doomsayers and negativists. Here's our chance to show how fast the group mind can move: Faster than any government, faster than the Borg, faster than any group of humans who have ever come together in the history of the planet. Faster, because we have clear minds and free will.

Please forward this to anyone and everyone you know. Jam it, spam it, cram it. Let's make this machine work. Let's make this technology serve us.

If we concentrate on our donations thru one agency, word of our joint effort is more likely to get out. The creator of this idea suggests the Red Cross, but there are other addresses below for those of you who may not choose to use the Red Cross. The important thing is to send a donation--one dollar or a hundred, whatever you can--and the message "from the Y2K Community." The originator does not want to be named so that the effort will appear to be exactly a united voluntary effort of people networked in common concern for all.

Faith, This was in our paper today. "Compounding the problem for the groups such as CRS(which you listed), World Vision and others with longtime development projects in the region, is that projects, whick would normally serve as a base of operations for relief efforts, have been destroyed. Communication remains nearly impossible and some relief organizations remain cut off from communities where they have development projects, said World Vision spokesman Angie Bartel. Thee group, which operates 13 projects - including child sponsorships programs - in Honduras, is committing $5-million to relief efforts. We are very, very fearful that we have lost sponsor children and children in the communities. Since we can't get through to our communities it has heightened this fear even more. Three communities with World Vision projects located in the hard-hit northern coastal region of Yoro, Hondoras, have still not been reached. Together the communities consist of an estimated 4,000 children, their families and 20 World Vision staff members. Roads are out, bridges are out. They have no way to reach them. We would be completely lucky if we did not lose children and staff members. For them to be able to rebound from this is going to take years...."
