discrimination against college students

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Fair Lending : One Thread

I am a college student and I foundthe perfect apartment and then the owner found out that we were college students and said she couldn't rent to us because we were both students. If one of us was however not a student she could rent to us. Is this legal or is this discrimination????

Melissa, I'm not a lawyer, but I believe that "discrimination," in the eyes of the law, can occur only against protected classes of people under federal, state or local law, such as discrimination based on race, sex, religion, etc. Being a college student does not put you in a protected class. You should contact your local fair housing council (look in the yellow pages under fair housing or call the national fair housing alliance in Washington, D.C.), but I believe this is the sort of discrimination that is legal.
