If you have announcements of upcoming community meetings or accounts of such events that have taken place, please post them here. While this thread may help inform members of your community of those events in advance, the thread's real purpose is to provide examples and ideas for others in the near future...

The following is a pretty good one. The people in the Oakland/San Francisco/Berkeley area are putting on a couple of meetings that look like they'd be good ones to attend, or pretty good ones to put on...

BAY2K strives to develop resilient and sustainable community responses to the challenges of the Year 2000 computer problem by providing information, contacts, and dialogue.

REGULAR MEETINGS ARE HELD ON THE FIRST AND SECOND WEDNESDAYS OF EACH MONTH, 7 PM, AT THE PRESIDIO ALLIANCE, BUILDING 563, JUST INSIDE OF THE LOMBARD STREET GATE TO THE PRESIDIO.

WEDNESDAY, November 4 (8TH MEETING):

7-8pm: Panel Discussion: Food, Water, Utilities and Sustainable y2k Preparation.

Panel members will address two questions:

1. What can we as urban dwellers do practically, in the next months and into the year 2000, to prepare sustainably for y2k?

2. In the face of possible infrastructure disruptions, what action can we take to sustain ourselves and our community?

Speakers: Doug Mosel of The Earth Institute of Northern California. The Institute provides opportunities to examine and transform personal values and habits, leading individuals and community to act responsibly for the Earth. Doug is developing a self study class for those interested in learning about the opportunities for sustainable community that y2k presents.

Hans Loffeld, Information Services Department, San Francisco City and County Water Department. Hans will discuss the y2k compliant status of water and give suggestions about water supply.

Lucius Canton, Director of Emergency Services, Office of the Mayor of San Francisco. Lucius will address the above questions in relation to emergency response.

8-9 pm: Question and answer period.

WEDNESDAY, November 11 (9TH MEETING):

7:00 pm, Y2K Information and Preparation Dialogues: Given the diverse perspectives on y2k, and the many issues involved, this meeting is an opportunity to dialogue in smaller groups about issues that are important to you.

Videotapes on Y2K technical and social issues are available for viewing by appointment.

Most candles are made with a carcinogenic toxic substance: paraffin. Paraffin is the left over residue from gasoline refining. Candleworks offers a clean-burning, 100% natural solution: Long burning candles made from soybean oil grown in America's Heartland. Each candle burns 60 hours $44 for one dozen (shipping is included in price): one dozen provides 720 hours of emergency light.
