G. & S.I

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Southern Railway : One Thread

On September 30, 1919, my grandfather rode the G. & S.I. RR from Hattiesburg, Mississippi to Racine, Wisconsin after being discharged from the army. Does anyone know what the name of the G. & S.I. Railroad was? I am guessing it as the Georgia & something railroad, but I have not been able to find any information. Thank you.

I think G&SI was "Gulf & Ship Island". I copied a very old photograph several years ago of a 4-4-0 "American" locomotive that I beleive was labeled that. Judging from your description this road may have become part of the "Mobile&Ohio","Gulf Mobile&Ohio","Illinois Central Gulf" group. You might check with their historical societies to see if I'm correct in my assumptions.Good luck.

Gulf & Ship Island was brought into the Illinois Central in 1946.
