Anyone read bill from 105th Congress-Oct. 9, 1998?

Has anyone read the October 9, 1998 bill regarding y2k? Sec 14 Consumer Awareness #5 A series of public awareness announcements or seminars on the potential effect that the Year 2000 computer problem could have on the provision of services by the Federal Government to the public, and the progress made in resolving the problem by the Federal agencies providing those services. Does this mean soon to be released televised public service announcements? If so, public awareness may escalate. Any thoughts on this?

I re-checked the url for the bill and found it confusing to access. Hope this helps.

http://www.gsa.gov click year 2000 and an index should appear. Click the square marked NEW, the bill is H.R. 4756

Newt Gingrich spoke yesterday about his strategy about Y2K during last week's budget "wars" with Clinton-Gore.

He didn't oppose more spending on Y2K (as part of the 'extra" money requested by the Whitre House), which is good.

But he did comment that there was a political angle as well:

"I was determined to give them (Clinton) everything they wanted on Y2K so they couldn't come back later and blame us (the Republicans) when it all fails. We don't think it's enough, nor is enough progress being made to date, but it's all they asked for."

So the House added the whole 'extra" amount requested by the government. Sounds like the Speaker (like Sen. Bennet) is hedging his bets, but isn't publically confident at all of success.

As a concerned "user" of the government services (we all are, to one way or another) - good, they're fully funded. As a taxpayer, d**m, they're fully funded. (Wish they didn't need so much, wish they had time to spend it more wisely, wish they had time to do the job right.....)

As a y2K observer, I wish the funds weren't so foolishly managed by the fools in the Executive Branch. They could have started the whole thing when the Social Security group began = then they would closer to finishing now.
