I would strongly suggest you read a book called "The Wisdom of Teams" by Jon R. Katzenbach and Douglas K. Smith. This book has benefits, case studies, and what an organization can expect to gain from teamwork.

Harvard Business School Press can also sell you (for only about $5.50) the Johnsonville Sausage case (get both A and B cases) -- one of the original and best-known instances of self-directed work teams in the US -- great stuff.
