After sunset on Hwy 280:

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Nature Photography Image Critique : One Thread

Film: Fuji Velvia 50, Pentax ZX-5N, 120-600mm Vivitar zoom lens on tripod. After photographing the sunset, I was trying to finish up the roll. Auto exposure, center weighted setting. No aperture opening or shutter speed settings were recorded.

After growing up in the Bay Area, I can't quite picture where or how this scene came about. It basically looks like a forest fire and has in general a very painting-like character. Interesting shot.

I am not sure why the picture turned-out this way. It was after I photographed an extremely colorful sunset after a thunderstorm. I guess a little bit of sun was still out. As I remember, it was much less colorful scene than this and the color was perhaps accumulated due to a two or four second exposure (it was a long auto exposure). It was unplanned and was a lucky shot at the end of my roll with unexpected results!

hey, Penicillin was discovered by accident. Whatever happened the effect is VERY nice. I would just crop it a little at the top and at the bottom.

yes, very unusual, "painterly" quality with pleasing overall effect; but i must admit that a little of this image goes a long way. wouldn't want to hang it in the kitchen.

I would like to see the original of this one. I think during scanning you lost some sharpness. Even your copyright text looks unsharp! Might be a compression artifact. Most of the picture (especially the top) has a strange artificially reticulated look to it too. In my opinion this picture cannot be properly judged in this digitized format, since the pattern and texture here (besides the obviously extreme color) is what makes this interesting.
