Shades of Pink

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Nature Photography Image Critique : One Thread

Taken with a Nikon CP900 digital camera. 35-mm equivalent settings 38-115 @ 115 mm, macro mode. 1:3.6. 1/176 sec. Cener-weighted average metering. Hand held.

In the available light the camera's CCD sensor shifted the hue from the purple I remember toward the shades of pink you see here. Rather than apply any correction I've left the image as it came from the camera.

Any comments on the result would be appreciated.

Very nice; I don't see anything not to like. Like your previous listing, Blossoms in Blue(?), I'm surprised by the softness of the image. I dunno, I guess I espected all digital images to be harder.

Gary,

Consider using a tripod, as it will allow you to concentrate fully on the image.

Was the cropping off of the top flower intentional? I think the image could be improved -slightly- if the negative space was at the top and left rather then the bottom and right...but tha's just a personal, subjective observation.

Digital camera images don't have the sharpness or dynamic range that even a 35mm camera can give...if you're serious about photography you might want to consider the (chaper and better ;>) traditional route...

This is a fairly nice picture. The lighting is soft but somehow not very even. The two flowers on the right side seem to be a bit under-exposed while the one of the left is just right.

I love these colors. the composition could have been improved by raising the camera a little. I really enjoy the colors that are captured by you and your digital camera. Thanks for sharing them with us.

Thanks very much for the comments. I respect the advice regarding the use of a tripod (yes, the missing petal tip on the top was inadvertant) but I haven't made that move yet. As to the trade-offs involved in use of a consumer level digital camera, they were made consciously, as noted in the commentary which I posted on my web site at http://www.pangea.ca/~schaefer. I expect a continued fairly rapid evolution of digital technology and, for the moment, will live with its shortcomings (when compared to available film-based technology). A major factor in all of this is that my use of the images has been entirely electronic. Print media comparisons would likely be more starkly favourable to film.

Thanks again for the valuable input I have received from the forum.
