The 1923 legislature designated the pua aloalo or hibiscus the flower emblem of Hawaii. Initially no particular color was specified, but in 1988 the legislature named the native yellow hibiscus the offical state flower. "Firsts and and Almost Firsts in Hawaii" compiled by Robert C.
