What's the dif between 6x7 and 67?

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Pentax 67 SLR : One Thread

I know this has been covered in bits and pieces in other posts, but I'm still trying to get a clear idea of the development of this camera to help me make an intelligent used purchase. Here is what I think I've learned from this and other sources. Please correct me where I am wrong and elaborate from your own knowledge and experience: There appear to be 4 versions of this camera. The original is from - what? the late 60's? - and was called a "6x7". It did not have MLU. No. 2 would be these original versions with a MLU modification. No. 3 added MLU - what year was this? Were there any other changes? No. 4 is the current model - how is this different from No. 3? At some point the name was changed from "6x7" to "67" - or was it the other way around? Is there a serial number dating system, like the one used by Hasselblad, or some other way to be sure about the age of a particular body? Thanks in advance for all responses.

Tom: The change from what you call version 3 to the present model occurred between Jan 1989 and Dec 1991. The TTL finder went from saying Asahi Pentax to just saying Pentax and the body designation went from 6x7 to 67. I'm guessing on the exact date but I think it was Dec 1990. SR
