Bock Lumber Co., Gainsville, Florida

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Shortline, Narrow Gauge and Industrial Railroading : One Thread

Hi,

Does anyone have any information on the Bock Lumber Co. of Gainsville, Florida ? In particular I'm looking for info on their locomotive # 1, an 0-4-4T Baldwin cn# 32792 of 1908. Standard gauge. This locomotive currently exists in a disassembled condition. I have a friend who recently purchased it, and is starting to restore it. Any info or photos of the locomotive or the Bock Lumber Co. would be helpful. Thank you, Don Marenzi

Ref. Bock Lumber Co.

I have the following refereces. In SHAY PATENT & DIRECT LOCOMOTIVES, sales Pamphlet of Lima Loco. Co. there is a reference to Bock Lumber Company at Arbourville, WV.

In BALDWIN LOCOMOTIVE WORKS panphlet #76, LOGGING LOCOMOTIVES they have a picture and specifications for a 0-4-4 Forney built for Bock Lumber Co. of Gainesville FL.

In TUMULT ON THE MOUNTAIN by Clarkson, p.34 there is a Brock Lumber Co. listed at Boyer, Pocahontas County, WV.

I have a listing in my Data base for Bock Lumber Co., M. P. for Bock Lumber Co. at Arbourville, West Virginia other listings fo Bock Lumber Co.

Boyer, WV is in Pocahontas County and is just north of Arborvale. Could this be a variant of the name and an extra letter in the Boyer name?

This is a little late but here it is , hope it helps you get on t

Baldwin 32792 was built in May of 1908 for the Bock Lumber Co. as their number 1. She was an 0-4-4 forney type with 9x14" cylinders and 33" driver diameter. I have extensive research in Florida logging and I doubt this company to be in Florida at all! I have lumber guides for Florida the covers the period of 1885 to 1930 and there is no mention of a Bock Lumber Co. As this engine has survived to this day, there has to be a paper trail somewhere, so I'll ask around. Stay tune for updates. Don
