Doing research on Joseph Rodman West. Owner of the San Francisco Price Current and Shipping List newspaper from 1853 to 1859. He joined the 1st California Calvary during the Civil War and became a brigadier general. Fort West in New Mexico was named after him and he captured Mangas Colorados, Apache chief. He later became a U.S. Senator from Louisianna. I'm interested in finding out anything about his newpaper and life in San Francisco.

In the "Daily Alta California", 18 August 1861, page 2, there was a short article which mentioned Joseph R. West. To summarize: "The Regimental Officers of the California Volunteers. The only regimental officers thus far announced for the regiment of California Volunteers to serve upon the Plains, are, Col. J. H. Carleton, Col. J.R. West and Major B.F. Davis. It will be a matter of satisfaction to the people of our state to know something of these men. . .Joseph R. West was born in Louisiana, and was Captain of the mounted volunteers in the Mexican war. He has resided in San Francisco ten or eleven years, during most of which time he has been connected with the volunteer militia of the State. He is better known to the people of San Francisco than either Carleton or Davis, and it is the universal opinion that he is a good soldier and a good manager. He has been an editor by profession, and has brains. No doubt is entertained by his loyalty. He was appointed by Gov. Downey Lieutenant Colonel of the Calvary Corps, but preferred a position in the Infantry -- the command of that arm of the expedition devolving [sp?] upon him. . ."
