The Blonde Women

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Aeon Flux : One Thread

A previous comment: "The blonde woman figure is used as at least three different people as well in the silent episodes." This brings up something interesting... in most of the first and second season episodes, there seems to be a pattern in the characters: Aeon(brunette), Miscellaneous Blonde Girl(I.E. RU-486, Trev's girlfriend, etc.) and Trevor. This triad pattern shows up in all of first season, in Gravity, in Leisure, and in Tide. In this pattern, the blonde woman always seems to be either subservient to or opposed to Aeon, either directly, as in Tide, or unseen, as in Gravity. The blonde girls are always skinner, more waifish, and they seem to have an underlying sense of bitchiness/ignorance/naivete about them. What could this pattern mean? It almost seems to imply something about the mind of the artist, his personal, real-life experiences. Maybe he had a bad date with a blonde? Or (now don't jump on me about this one, just a speculation) perhaps Chung is revealing some internal preferrence toward Asians, symbolized by the dominating, black-haired Aeon? These sound like big claims, but I'm really just brainstorming, I have no idea what they could mean. And has Chung rejected use of this pattern in third season? Could it be that, like his use of violence in the first and second seasons, he simply "got it out of his system"? If so, what is "it"? I think this is one of the more interesting and subtley obvious overall patterns to the show, at least in its earlier seasons.

By all means, think away. It's what this board is for. Interesting ideas, definitely not something I would have picked up (don't know what that says about me....)

I've found an example of the blonde-Trevor-Aeon pattern in third season: in The Purge, in the final scene. The role of "the blonde" is taken by Trevor's two alleged children. As with all other examples of this pattern, the girls are opposed to Aeon, and they have an attitude about them. I would say that Celia in "The Demiurge" would also complete the pattern, but she's not a blonde. Otherwise, she would fit perfectly. As for Sybil, I think her relationship to Aeon fills a completely different category... Aeon seems to sympathize with Sybil at times, and is not eternally opposed to her.

Sybil's not blonde.

Oh...that was your point. 8P

Perhaps I should extend the pattern to include any non-brunette woman. If this is done, many other relationships throughout season 3 would fit the pattern, like Lindsze in "Ether Drift Theory" and, if you consider the "alien" in "End Sinister" to have female qualities, you could count it, too.

Always thought sybil was a blonde, okay, maybe strawberry-blonde.

Hey, picked up on this 'blonde' thing. This is very interesting. I hope that the entire column will get picked up and read, very nice points made here, but the one thing is left out, is that TREVOR is a blonde. I fit in the strawberry blonde thing, but I consider myself to be a redhead, and personally hate to be referred to as a blonde, there is a kind of a stigma attached to it, anyone else out there see Mat's point?

Well lets look at A LAst Time For Everything, the waify chicks are all sorta Aeonish. That violates the blonde theory completely. Lets just says that all women compared to Aeon are inferior. All women are in competion and all women fail. We don't see weakness in most females in the show, we see comarative failings. Its only in realtion that they seem weak. Does Nader, Bargeld, even the thuggish Bamabara seem inferior to Trevor? I think that Trevor being Norweigian white, and Aeon being Asian has a undertone. I see this combination of partners more frequently than others has anyone else noticed this? Serious white guys and asian girls, I think that it a pattern Peter probably noticed while putting these two together.

How is Aeon not Asian? She a bit mixed, but I see a real prominant Asian look. This should be fun the geneology of cartoons! Some other animated fun fact about cartoon race. Ren isn't mexican, He Man isn't Sacandinavian, Yu-Gi-Oh isn't Japenese, neither are any of the sailor scouts, and finally I beleive that the Decepicons are Germans.
