Must on be from "out of town" to be an expert?

Peter de Jager spoke in Baton Rouge, La. last week and subsequently local newspaper ran three articles on the Year 2000 problem. There has been very little attention paid to this problem by the local press here in the state capital but now that Peter has spoken to a few hundred local people who have refused to hear this news from local experts there seems to be an increased awareness. I wish that we could clone Peter and send him to every city at once. I am reminded of what a consultant friend of mine told me regarding all the traveling he did. It was simply this: "Don, in order to be an expert you have to be from out of town!" I hope all of you out-of-towners keep making noise. Now if Mr. Yourdon would come talk to the same group of ostriches and give them a copy of his book......

As a consultant, I have to agree with the above assessment. Too many times I have been brought into a company that should have just listened to their own people (or at least given them the chance to speak!) before calling in an "expert".
