Starting a community in Arizona or New Mexico?

I am looking to join or help start a small group to ride out Y2K in a rural area. Few of us are proficient at being self-reliant to the degree that we can move into a rural area on short notice and expect to do well during a major disruption. Ideally, a nonpartsan nondenominational group of intelligent people in any given area should be able to find one another through the medium of the net. I would like to see (and join) such a group in AZ or NM where we could aquire a big parcel and subdivide it into individually owned smaller parcels. That way we don't tie ourselves into a lot of common property or commune type of arrangements which might hinder those who may seek to move on later. I already have a 4 acre parcel in southern AZ with 2 other 4 acre parcels adjacent to it (they don't belong to me but they are for sale). It is not, however, terribly remote. Six miles out of town, it has two dirt roads adjoining the property and some of the 4 acre parcels around it also have residents. I'd be glad to hear any good leads or ideas for this or some other area. Thanks

Be wary of subdividing land in New Mexico. The "New Mexico Subdivision Act" makes it vedry expensive to subdivde. you have to get expensive experts to test archeological, water, soil conditions.I was recently show land that was apparently not legally subdivided and if I had bought it would have resulted in expensive trips to lawyers and surveyors.
