My grandfather was given a medal for being in the San Francisco Home Guard in World War I. Do you have any information on this activity?

Apparently there was a "California military reserve" which existed between 1917 and 1920. It was also known as the "home guard". An article in the S.F. Chronicle (14 March 1920) states the Governor ordered its discontinuance, and discharge papers were given.
