The U.S. General Accounting Office has released an exposure draft of its Year 2000 business continuity planning guide. The guide, entitled "Year 2000 Computing Crisis: Business Continuity and Contingency Planning" (GAO/AIMD-10.1.19, March 1998), provides a conceptual framework for helping large organizations to manage the risk of potential Year 2000-induced disruptions to their operations. The guide builds upon our previously issued Year 2000 assessment guide (GAO/AIMD-10.1.14, Sept. 1997), and draws on a variety of other industry and government sources.

We are distributing the guide as a service to the audit and information technology management communities. We hope that you will find the guide useful in dealing with the year 2000 business and contingency planning issues confronting your organization, and that you will share with us your comments and suggestions.
