MD&S Locomotive Colors

greenspun.com : LUSENET : ACL and SAL Railroads Historical Society : One Thread

I am interested in finding out the colors used on Macon Dublin & Savannah RS2 and RS3 locomotives. I would like to know the colors for the locomotive body and the lettering. B&W pictures of these engines are in Warren Calloway's book SEABOARD AIR LINE MOTIVE POWER on pages 227 & 228. Any help would be appreciated

There's a small photo of a MD&S RS3 in the Beckum Seaboard book, too. Maybe the MD's road units WERE black-and-orange. Could it be that the colors in the photograph have distorted? I have slides of CofG blue- and-grey engines whose orange stripes look red, or even pinkish. I've seen a color picture in a published book that looks like that, too.

I purchased a duplicate slide set from Al Chione in Colorado in 1990 that had 3 MD&S shots. Featured were MD&S RS2 #1700, MD&S RS2 #1702, and MD&S RS3 #1705. While not perfectly lit, they are better than nothing as there are probaly very few color shots of this road in existance. In looking at these slides, it appears to me that the units are in black paint, with orange stripes, lettering, and safety appliances. The logo is also in orange. The lettering on the RS3 may be gold, but it looks more like it is also orange, toned down with a coat of road grime. The Chione set # SW-65 MD&S-Tennessee Central Power & Trains. The bad news is that he only offers his sets for a certain period of time, and that's it. The good news is that he began to re-issue his sets a few years ago, and has'nt made it to this set yet, so check his lists.

From a couple of color prints I have, the colors were green carbody and yellow/gold stripes and lettering. I have not been able to determine if the colors were the same as SAL's green and yellow. but they appear in the photos to be different. This may be just due to the color reproduction however.
