Once I make changes to my review shopping cart page and press the recalculate button, my browsers stalls and does not refresh the page after recalculating the items. However, after pressing the refresh button on my browser, I do get the updated information. Why doesn't the recalculate button refresh automatically?

The recalculate button refresh automatically, but your browser doesn't show this, he shows you his cache. You should add the tag: in your header-file for an automatic reload.
