About the Grassroots Information Coordination Center (GICC) Forum

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Grassroots Information Coordination Center (GICC) : Policy

The Grassroots Information Coordination Center (GICC) formed in late December 1999 as means to collect and provide fast and accurate information on Y2K impacts at the community level. Anticipating that getting details on Y2K impacts would be difficult, a grassroots effort formed to collect and provide fast and accurate information on Y2K impacts at the community level. The Grassroots Information Coordination Center (GICC) began as an attempt to provide a unique Y2K information resource as a trustworthy adjunct and grassroots alternative to government and industry information sharing efforts.

Since then, the GICC forum has broadened to serve as a more general source of information about various threats to the global infrastructure, which may or may not be related to Y2K. Each of the stories presented here at GICC are pieces of a larger puzzle. Each one describes a small piece of the story that will play itself out in the coming months and coming years. If we take the time to "piece the puzzle together" we can be more prepared for what the future entails, both as individuals and as members of our respective communities. An implicit goal of GICC is to help each of us to formulate long-term goals for the future.

GICC provides a forum where volunteers provide late-breaking news of events. The focus is on verifiable news stories, and posts are most helpful to the GICC community when they include a guide to the source of the information (such as an URL or "web address"). GICC can thrive only when readers make an effort to contribute articles and observations.

In a truly democratic process, the project provides a participatory, open space where anyone can post news updates. No one owns GICC. Rather, it's autonomous, widespread, self-organizing, and cuts across traditional lines of generational and political affiliation, and is on the cutting edge of the kind of grass roots civic initiatives changing the face of contemporary society.

Moderators will perform quality assurance.

How this System Works

This bboard software was written by Philip Greenspun and hosted for free by him started in 1995. Anyone could come in and create a forum and moderate the discussion. Most of the thousands of forums on this server were and are publicly searchable by Google and other Web indices.
