guarantor rights

My ex-wife, who has the mortgage in her sole name but for which I am the guarantor, has mortgage arrears yet has taken tenants and has, herself, moved elsewhere. I have informed the Building Society as I no longer wish to be responsible. Will this absolve me from any legal obligations and if not, how do I remove myself from responsibility?
