Microphone advice

Hi. I need some advice on purchasing a mic. I have absolutely no experience in audio engineering. All the advice I have sought has resulted in rhetoric I don't fully understand. I need a unidirectional mic; it will be used mainly for recording dialoque, no folies or ambiece. I can only afford to buy one mic and have about $600 to blow. What is best: unidirectional, supercardioid, or hypercardioid? There are a few mics I've been looking at, but does anyone have recommendations?
