Displaying battery status in XL-1 B&W viewfinder

I'm running Canon's FU-1000 black and white viewfinder, and I can't figure out how to make it display battery status. The first indication I have is when it flashes to tell me it's about to quit. It's really annoying. Does anyone know how to put up a constant battery status display?
