Canon XL1 Gain & Frame vs Movie modes

I recently purchased a Canon XL1. I kind of understand GAIN but I am confused. Does it have to do with contrast or sound or are the two related?
My second question is can you explaind frame and movie mode options
I will be shooting a band in a place called 328 Musical Hall.
Warehouse type of enviroment low light and will be loud. Any suggestions are greatly appreciated.
