Agreed a sum, but they're chasing ex-spouse too

My partner and I have negotiated a sum with a major lender in connection with shortfall. On the same day as this was agreed, his ex-wife, who was a joint mortgagee, has had a demand for the full amount.She has no income and cannot pay anything. HOw can we make sure that when we pay the agreed sum, they won't chase his ex-wife as well?
