endowment mortgages are they to be avoided

How can you tell if an endowment is going to cover your mortgage at the end of its term, if rates continually change. Is it guess work or is there a foolproof method of calculation? If you are unable to forecast the final cash in figure until a certain length of time has elapsed ie. 10,15 or 20 years, is it all just guesswork up to the final stages of the policies maturity date?
