I've drilled holes in some and attached 1/4X20 coupling nuts to get them to mount to things, but there are easier ways to do it (think "duct tape"). You can use an old tripod, but they are often not high enough, so a light stand is better. The easiest way to work with rolled background paper is to leave the roll on the floor and unwind as much as you need to go up the wall. This way, if you don't tear a big hole in the middle, you can roll it back up to use it again.
