720 x 480 or 720 x 486 ?

Does anybody know why these two pixel dimensions appear in different
DV apps, and what effect it has on editing ? We're using Premiere 5
and After Affects 4 (when we get to editing).
Also, does anyone know the pixel dimensions of a frame shot in 16:9
on an XL1 ?
